I decided to do something different today. I’m going to ramble about a story; Sinbad! And I won’t be alone! My cousin, Star, is joining us today. I did mentioned her before, but today she’ll be a part of the ramble. (Psst, go check out her channel! Link below) We’ll be analyzing, fangirling, and talking about Sinbad, the 2003 animated film. Oh, and I’m sure you noticed the cute little bubble-avatar I made! I will be using it for future uploads too. This avatar is very different compared to the one on my YouTube channel, and I like it better. Meaning of course, a lot of fun work to update the avatar on my Channel, haha. Moving on, during this ramble we’ll talk about the things we liked, and didn’t like. We’ll also try and fit the movie into The Three Act Structure. We’re mainly doing this analyzation to learn more about storytelling, and apply it to our own stories. We’re going to talk about the characters, plot, worldbuilding, -and because we’re artists- the style. Unfortunately because of timing reasons, I will be splitting this into two parts. But perhaps it’s better for you, it would be less to read. Get a cup of coffee, and enjoy today’s ramble!

First Impressions

How much did you enjoy this movie?

-Winter- I enjoyed it A LOT. I immediately loved all the characters, all the subtle interactions, relationships, action, and plot! I’ll certainly be fangirling over all the characters throughout this.

-Star- I enjoyed it a lot, it was very connecting, and it felt real, like I was being transported into the story too. It was very immersive and… connecting? XD
Yeah, I liked this movie, 10/10

How did this movie make you feel?

-Winter- I felt so happy and content watching the characters! I felt completely immersed into the movie. At no point did the movie feel slow or unnatural to me, it felt so normal! It was like I watched the characters live in their world. There were no actors, there were no scripts.

-Star- I felt very adventurous, I noticed a lot of Jack Sparrow action in Sindbad. I liked watching the action and interaction of the characters! From the get-go we could already see a lot of character interaction between the prince and Sinbad. I felt very content watching the movie, it didn’t feel like anything was wrong with it, it was very enjoyable to watch! But alas here we are trying to analyze and torture it-
I felt like the movie was very ‘getting-to-the-point-‘but in a nice immersive way. I got a lot out from watching this movie it made me feel very happy. Yeah, it didn’t feel slow or unnatural, but it wasn’t as mysterious either. It was enjoyable to get answers in a nice speed. They gave a lot of info in this movie too.

Did you enjoy the characters?

-Winter- YES! They were my FAVOURITE part of the movie. They didn’t feel written up out of nowhere AT ALL. They felt natural, and their interactions- Oh, the interactions! Nothing felt forced or acted. I was beside them on their adventure. I could understand and connect with them. Right from the beginning they hit me with clear, telling interactions between Sinbad and Prince Proteus. I mean, come on! You could easily tell they were friends, or old buddies.

-Star- YIS. I loved the interaction of the characters, ‘specially in the very beginning when Sinbad and the Prince interact. From the get-go we could already notice that they had a lot of backstory together. It gave a wonderful foundation for the rest of the plot, but I think that the action and characters were my favourite part. And seeing their reactions to situations they were put in, like when Marina had to save the ship when they went through the siren’s grove. Or when Sinbad had to save Marina from the giant snow eagle, or when the Prince stood in Sinbad’s place when he was suppose to be executed, or when he let Marina go to follow her dream to stay on the ocean and have adventures with Sinbad. Their feelings towards each other were very clear and real. I didn’t feel like there was any agonizing slow burn that would’ve thrown the whole story off and out the window.

What did you most like about this movie?

-Winter- Alright, I already fangirled in the previous question over the Characters, and I stick by it. This movie was so natural to me, the characters were real. It was show-and-tell beautifully done. They never spoon-fed you what their relationships were, they showed you what they meant to each other through the interactions. Like Sinbad and Proteus, and especially Sinbad and Marina. If you already watched the movie and went back, you would totally be able to pick up that Sinbad loved Marina, just from his subtle interactions. The only example I can think of right now is when they were sliding off the huge fish-thing. Even though they were fighting like dogs a couple minutes ago, as they were sliding, Sinbad was shielding and protecting Marina. It wasn’t loud, or emphasized, you had to look closely to see it.

-Star- Probably the characters, but I also loved the plot action- and how the characters reacted to situations. But mostly the very action-driven parts, even though I loved the deep parts the characters had, there was just something thrilling about the plain action-y epic parts of the movie! It gives a huge thrill of adventure. And since I am a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, and really liked that movie too, I felt like I could draw a connecting line to Sinbad and Pirates of the Caribbean. Mainly just because of all the action! Even though Character arcs are important in any story, I do feel like giving pressured action to the characters to force them to act, was a nice way to give them gradual character arcs! So, I feel like the adventurous action had a good part in the Character arcs and story progression.

What did you not like about this movie?

-Winter- I can’t really complain about anything. If I really must pick something, it would be that the movie ended. I wish it was longer, there is just so much material to continue the story with a sequel! But that’s just a personal wish of mine, I was quite satisfied with the ending.

-Star- Even though it’s not a big deal, I feel like it would’ve been a nice touch to mention more backstory about the characters. The only time I could recall them really talking about past events, was about how Sinbad met the Prince, and that for the first time he was jealous of his friend for having such a beautiful lady he was engaged to. (Marina.) I think it would’ve still been overkill if they mentioned the past too much- but at least just giving the viewers a peek into some of the character’s backstory, would’ve made me feel EVEN MORE connected with the characters! But despite this wish, I definitely do not see it as a huge problem, and it’s probably just personal preference, but I did want to know a little more about Sinbad and the Prince, and Marina and the Prince. So ye- Like why did the Prince let go of Marina so quickly? Perhaps he was just genuinely being kind and considering.

The Plot

Was the plot enjoyable?

-Winter- I did enjoy it; it was carefully structured to fit with the characters. I, personally, never was a person interested that much in action, I was always more interested in the Characters. But if I think about it, the plot was well made to fit the characters, to push them forward into their story, and to force them to do things they wouldn’t have in other circumstances. For me, plot is put into a story to emphasize the characters, because it’s the characters’ stories and growth I’m interested in. I really did enjoy how they did the plot, and I particularly liked how they made the goddess and Sinbad interact before she straight-up scammed him. Even though I didn’t like the goddess, the interactions between her and Sinbad was *chef’s kiss*. -Villains are always fun to watch-

-Star- I think that was the best part apart from the characters, but yeah, I just really liked the plot story and adventurous action. I enjoyed seeing how the situations they were put in (the risky action-y adventure parts) changed the characters, and how the character’s decisions changed the outcome of the story. Cuz to be fair, I think that the plot was a big helping hand in getting the character’s moving, given their fear and desires. For instance: I don’t think that Maria would’ve had such a strong relationship with Sinbad if it weren’t for the Prince’s decision to wait in Sinbad’s place while Sinbad tires to retrieve the stolen Book. Because even though Sinbad loved Marina from the beginning he saw her, I don’t think Marina felt the same way. UNTIL she went through all the crazy plot adventures, and that forced her to interact with the man who made the prince decide to wait for his doom. Because the only reason why Marina was on that ship with Sinbad was to save the Prince, and also to have the taste of adventure herself. It was only during all the adventure and plot twists that Marina found out how she really felt toward Sinbad. And realizing that she loved him, she also realized that she loved the adventures they had and what a great team they were if they didn’t fight as much. So, do I feel like plot played a big role in this story? Yes. But it was only because it forced the characters to make decisions, if the characters didn’t make decisions the story would’ve been very boring in general, but seeing their fears and desires fight against them, making all these adventurous plot twists happen, was interesting to see how they reacted and how their decisions changed the story outcome! I liked the way Winter put it, the Plot was constructed to work for the CHARACTERS and the Characters’ decisions were constructed to make the story move forward and have a nice outcome and end!

Did you ever feel there were some places in the movie where it felt odd or awkwardly slow?

-Winter- I agree with Star concerning the prince giving up Marina. It isn’t that big a deal to me, but I do feel the conversation could have been longer and there could have been a little bit more pain in there. Although I do think it was in-character for the prince to give up Marina eventually, but it felt a little bit like, “Oh- wow- okay, I guess they’re over now.” Something Star and I were able to realise while discussing for this question was that Marina never loved the prince in a romantic-relationship-y kind of way. As she said in the movie, she was doing it because it was her duty. Getting back to the prince, I do feel that he would have given her up because I could tell he knew Marina’s heart was not with him. So, my only problem was the length of the conversation between them, but it was practically in the end of the movie, so I suppose they did it for timing reasons.

-Star- the part where I thought it was slow, was when Sinbad and his people came into the party, but honestly now that I think about it, it actually balances the plot out, because it was giving a breather for all the action that would come later on in the story. Because let’s face it, the plot was filled with a lot of adventure, and I think it made sense to have that little bit where Sinbad and his men just hanged around in the party. Another thing that seemed a little odd, was how quickly the prince let go of Marina. I could definitely tell that the Prince loved Marina, and I also thought that Marina loved the prince, but she actually didn’t love him in that way. Because when she explained to Sinbad why she was on his ship and why she as so determined to help him find the book to return on time, she goes on to explain that she’s doing in for her people. She didn’t mention her love for the Prince but rather she acted like it was her duty because she loved her people, she felt responsible if the Prince died, and she also felt like it was her duty to love the Prince and marry him as it was arranged. And I think that the Prince saw this a lot, because it was also in the party when Marina said: “It looks beautiful out there…” She was referring to the open ocean, and the Prince said: “Yes I know, soon I’ll be king! And you’ll be right beside me, the great book has strong light.” (or something couldn’t recall the exact dialog) but I do remember that the prince was referring to their future together in the kingdom, stating that the Prince loved his people so much that Marina probably thought it shameful and felt guilty that she wanted adventure that wasn’t even for a women of her virtue. Since her duty was to her people, she thought that it was selfish to want to have adventures in a ship on the ocean. The Prince probably noticed this and thought something like: “It’s a waste of time to love someone who doesn’t truly love you back,” And I think he also showed his loyalty to his people, because he let Marina go because he cared about how she felt and what she wanted. Though I do feel like many people would think that the prince didn’t love Marina at all because of how quickly he let her go, I feel like there could’ve been a deeper conversation between them perhaps? But in any-case- I guess it just showed us an assurance that the Prince would be a considering and wise ruling King, and that he loved Marina enough to let her go. And Marina parted with the Prince in good terms, and as good friends towards the end of the movie!

Unfortunately, that is the end of today’s ramble!
